Frequently asked questions

What is Steps to Healing's therapeutic approach?

We specialise in movement-focused approaches to support healing in the body, helping you process challenging life experiences in a way that feels safe and manageable. Sessions might include gentle stretching, mindful movement, or simple exercises - you only ever do what you feel comfortable with.

In addition to somatic (body-based) therapies, we also offer:

  • Narrative Therapy – exploring the stories that shape our lives and creating space for new meanings.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – learning to accept thoughts and feelings while moving toward what truly matters.

  • Somatic Approaches – working with the body to restore safety, presence, and connection.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) – supporting the brain and body to heal from traumatic or distressing memories.

  • Polyvagal-Informed Therapy – helping regulate the nervous system to build a greater sense of calm and safety.

  • Play, Art and/or Dance Movement Therapy – using movement and creative expression as pathways to healing and self-discovery.

Are sessions online or in-person?

Counselling sessions can be offered both online and face to face across diverse client backgrounds and ages. Our in-person sessions are available in North Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.

What is somatic counselling?

Somatic counselling is a type of therapy that focuses on the connection between your mind and body. It helps you become aware of how emotions and past experiences are held in your body - like tension, tightness, or restlessness - and supports healing through gentle, body-based practices.

For example, during a session, you might:

  • Notice and explore physical sensations related to stress or memories.

  • Practice gentle breathing or movement exercises to release tension.

  • Use guided exercises, stretching, or mindful movement to feel safer and more grounded in your body.

The goal is to help you feel more comfortable, present, and safe in your own body, while processing emotions and experiences in a way that words alone might not fully capture.

Who can benefit from counselling?

Steps to Healing can support individuals, couples, and families of all genders and cultural backgrounds, across all life stages - from children as young as four years-old, to older adults.

We focus on meeting people's diverse emotional needs, providing a safe and inclusive space for healing and growth.
